A Brief Note from the Author

This book did not begin as a project to write.

It began as an attempt to understand a season that many believers quietly find themselves in.

The familiar spaces of inheritance once carried such weight. They shaped how we spoke about faith, how we imagined growth, and how we expected God to work.

Yet for many, something quieter has begun to emerge. The structures remain, but the weight they once carried does not seem to rest there in the same way.

Many believers today carry a quiet sense of spiritual displacement. Their faith remains alive, yet the structures that once shaped it no longer seem to fit. Calling All Exiles explores this experience through the lens of Scripture, suggesting that what feels like loss may actually be preparation. Rather than offering a program or a new model to adopt, this book invites readers to consider how God may be forming attentiveness and faithfulness in unfamiliar terrain.

FROM CHAPTER 1

Signs You May Be an Exile

If you’ve ever been guilted with the phrase “forsaking the fellowship of believers” when your heart was actually longing for deeper faithfulness — you might be an exile.

If asking honest questions made you feel like a problem to be managed rather than a disciple to be formed — you might be an exile.

If you’ve wondered whether your discomfort was disobedience — or discernment — you might be an exile.

What This Season May Be Asking of You

Exile often begins with recognition, but it rarely ends there.

Scripture shows that seasons of displacement can become places of clarity, formation, and preparation.

These reflections invite the reader to consider what such a season may be asking of them.

1. Accept

Accept that exile is not always failure or rebellion.

At times the Spirit leads people through seasons where familiar structures can no longer carry the weight of living faith. Recognizing exile may be the beginning of clearer attentiveness rather than the end of belonging.

2. Celebrate

Celebrate the faithfulness that brought you this far.

Many who find themselves in exile remained longer than comfort allowed because loyalty, truth, and integrity mattered to them. Those instincts are not weaknesses — they are often the soil where deeper formation begins.

3. Transform

Allow exile to become preparation rather than isolation.

Throughout Scripture, exile becomes the place where God clarifies vision, reshapes identity, and prepares His people for what comes next. Transformation rarely begins with control — it begins with attentiveness.

About The Author

Alan B. Rose writes as a fellow traveler more than a teacher—someone still learning to recognize where the Spirit is at work in ordinary life. Now in his late seventies, he carries the perspective of years that have included success, missteps, restoration, and long stretches where faithfulness mattered more than visibility.

Much of what shaped this book grew out of quieter seasons, when faith remained steady but familiar structures no longer felt like home. What once felt like dislocation he now understands as God’s patient preparation—work that often only becomes clear in hindsight.

His journey has included business leadership, seasons of ministry involvement, military service, and extended periods of listening rather than leading. Years of professional and personal travel across multiple regions of the world gradually revealed many of the same spiritual tensions reflected in these pages—often appearing in different forms, but carrying similar patterns of displacement, uncertainty, and longing for attentiveness to God beyond familiar structures.

Alan and his wife, Linda, have shared more than five decades of marriage marked by grace, perseverance, and ongoing renewal in Christ. Together they continue discovering that following the Spirit rarely provides full resolution, but consistently provides enough light for the next step.

He remains grateful simply to witness what God continues to do, often quietly, often unexpectedly, and always faithfully.
